Scorching conditions and intense wildfires have swept through the parched landscape of Western Australia. With temperatures forecast to persist soaring above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a severe heatwave warning has been issued across much of the southwestern region.

Broad Heatwave Warnings Throughout the Region

These conditions follow recent fires in another state, which caused the destruction of properties and fatalities. Intense heat alerts have also been activated for the coming days in parts of SA and New South Wales, as a system of high pressure moves eastward, delivering intense sunshine to much of the area.

The mix of tinder-dry land and unbroken heat creates a volatile scenario for firefighters.

Worldwide Climatic Events Trigger Disruption

In another part of the world, a major city was plunged into darkness last week after powerful gusts compromised the urban power grid, with falling trees knocking out electricity cables. The weather conditions also led to major travel disruption at a key airport, where numerous flights were cancelled. Severe impact on electrical infrastructure is anticipated to cause ongoing problems as utility companies scramble to reconnect electricity to over 1 million residents.

Atypical Fog Covers Sunny Region

Meanwhile, a valley famed for its clear skies and plentiful sunlight has experienced one of its grayest and foggiest periods on record. A specific type of low cloud, which usually lasts for only a short time, has been remarkably widespread and persistent this year, holding temperatures at a major airport below 8C for more than a week – the most prolonged period in more than three decades. The extended haze has been driven by unprecedented fall precipitation that resulted in soils saturated.

Severe Weather Brings Snow to Tourist Destination

Turning to Spain, a powerful storm has brought intense rainfall, powerful winds and even snowfall to a group of islands – conditions many would not associate with this favored holiday destination. While snow is not unheard of at higher ground, the system brought some of the deepest accumulations since 2016 to a protected area, compelling its temporary shutdown.

In addition to the snowfall, fierce winds from the north swept across the archipelago, with wind gusts exceeding 50mph observed on several islands. The effect of the weather event is expected to diminish this week with more typical conditions taking hold.
