Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People purchasing such medications must be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to original weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is higher among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts caution that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural management.
