Harvard ex-president Summers Leaves from AI Company's Directors
One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is leaving the directorate at OpenAI, just days after a batch of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became public.
The economist remarked in a statement that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have participated, enthusiastic about the prospects of the organization, and look forward following their development".
Summers, who once led the Ivy League institution, announced on recently that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his association with Epstein.
Email Communications
The newly public communications revealed that the official corresponded with the financier until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 apprehension for accused trafficking of underage individuals.
In additional comments, the AI firm stated it respected his choice to depart.
"We appreciate his many contributions and the viewpoint he provided to the Board," OpenAI stated.
Legislative Background
This development follows after the two houses of the US legislature decided on Tuesday to approve a legislation that would mandate the Department of Justice to release its files on Jeffrey Epstein.
The legislation will then move to the administration of the White House for approval. The President has indicated he expects to sign the measure, after modifying his view on the issue following pushback from his base.

A group of Epstein-connected messages disclosed by the House Oversight Committee last week included multiple high-profile figures in the Epstein's previous network, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.
The messages indicated that the professor and the financier dined together frequently, with Epstein often seeking to introduce the academic to notable world leaders.
Individual Statement
After the correspondence were shared with the public, he expressed he took "total ownership for my poor judgment to maintain corresponding with the financier".
He continued that he desired "to rebuild faith and fix relationships with the individuals most important to me".
Previous Positions
The professor held leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; functioning as Treasury chief under the former president, and as head of the White House economic team under the former leader.
He presided over the university from five years and remains a professor there. When declaring his withdrawal from public roles previously on this week, he stated he would continue his educational duties.
Further Repercussions
Following his declaration on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a liberal policy institute in the capital where he was a prominent member, announced that Summers was ceased to be associated with the group.
He entered the board of the AI company, which creates the language model, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to oust its top executive Sam Altman.
