Far-Right Ex- Legislator J.A. Kast Chosen as Chile's Next President.
In a decisive final ballot, ultra-conservative politician José Antonio Kast has clinched the presidential office in Chile.
A Commanding Win
After more than 99% of ballots counted, Kast garnered 58.17% of the votes, defeating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having earlier been lost by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.
Agenda Built On Law and Order and Migration
Recognized for his unwavering socially conservative views and praise for the era of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was largely centered on promises to address increasing violence and drastically curb migration.
He consistently pointed to migrants, particularly the approximately 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. During the race, he delivered an final demand for them to depart before the inauguration or face deportation.
His policy ideas included controversial measures such as building camps, barriers, security fences, and bolstering the military presence on the northern frontier.
Amid a Broader Trend
Several observers view Kast's success as fitting into a broader right-wing trend in Latin America, coming after recent electoral results in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Nevertheless, other analysts also view it as a part of the regular swing of power between left-wing and right-wing leadership since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.
Leading Lacking a Solid Mandate
In spite of his clear electoral win, Kast will not command an absolute majority in parliament, neither in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even when all conservative parties are grouped together.
This legislative situation could complicate his plans, such as a promise to slash public spending by billions within a year and a half—a plan for which he has yet to provided concrete steps.
"There are several things about how a Kast presidency will operate that are uncertain because he has not detailed the way he will achieve them," said a political professor.
The expert stated, "In terms of the economy, it is highly probable we will see adjustment measures associated with the right-wing. But where there is far less doubt is on public safety, because that has been his central theme throughout the race."
