Aaron Rai Clinches Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Against Tommy Fleetwood
Aaron Rai displayed exceptional composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, beating his compatriot in a tense play-off following a rollercoaster final round of competition.
Rai nailed a crucial birdie from just over eight feet to seal the win, repeating his sole prior Rolex Series success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was likewise a playoff win over the same opponent.
Final Round Drama
The champion started the final round with a single stroke advantage over countryman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of 263 after a up-and-down, five-under final round that featured seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.
The challenger edged a stroke clear with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie putt on the 16th, but his rival tied it up again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the final green.
Play-Off Climax
This set up a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai prevailed to claim the championship and $1.5m (£1.13m) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a world-class golfer and an even better person. To play with him the last two days was truly memorable,” said the winner, the present 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s hard to describe at the moment how it feels. It is amazing to be holding the trophy.”
Notable Performances
The Northern Irish star left himself a bit too far to make up, finishing a stroke behind in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a spectacular 62 final round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever score on the European Tour, comprising eight birdies and one eagle.
Højgaard fired six birdie putts of his own, but his chances of leading the leaderboard were dented by a dropped shot on the twelfth. England’s Mansell produced an excellent final-round seven-under to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australian Hillier.
